Entry Five: Future Literate Me

Reading will play a big role in my future. Hopefully I will be a lawyer one day. :) Reading and writing are two very important skills for a lawyer. Have you ever walked into a law office (or watched a movie) and seen the shelves and shelves of law books? Freshman year, the first time I walked into Mr. Simonson's office (he's the mock trial lawyer advisor) I was fascinated by his book shelf. It took up an entire wall of his office! I was staring at all those books and wondering if he had read them all. Well now I know, lawyers don't read those books from cover to cover but they are used as a reference. Case law is recorded so lawyers who are preparing a case can see the outcomes and strategies of similar cases. Similarly lawyers read the affidavits or statements made by witnesses. There's also a lot of paper work involved in the charge. And then there are the rules! Lawyers need to brush up on objections and court room procedure sometimes. This all involves a lot of reading! Often the reading is complicated and dense. That's where practice from reading books like Heart of Darkness  is helpful. ;) Reading help us as speakers and writers because we can see how other's articulate their ideas and then we can apply that structure to our own philosophies and ideas. Reading books by many authors has contributed to my personal writing style and the way I share my thoughts with others. This year in mock trial I had to write opening statements. While writing, I read other opening statements and it was very helpful. Most likely, this is how I will use reading in my future.
To be a lawyer a lot of school is required. I'll read during my three years in law school. Before that I'll read in my four years of college and of course next year in AP Lang.  I'll read text books, novels and newspaper articles. As for my immediate future, I'll read when I'm done blogging! I'm currently reading Angela's Ashes (it's so sad!).
I'll also read for pleasure in the future! I always have in the past and I do now. One day, I'll read to my children like my parents read to me. There are many children books that are classics so I'll probably read my children many of the books that were read to me as a child.
I hope that reading plays the role I envision that it will in my future. If I read in the ways I described above, I'd be very happy. :)

  2. I can imagine you years from now sitting in your office, with so many clients. Your going to make a great lawyer. My grandmother was a paralegal, and she mentioned how lawyers have a lot of reading.
